The National Forest Inventory of Ukraine is a system of regular sampling surveys to obtain statistically sound information on quantitative and qualitative indicators of the state and dynamics of the country’s forests, their resource potential for the needs of public administration, strategic forestry planning, state forest cadastre, environmental monitoring, and international forest reporting.
In Ukraine, pilot work on the preparation and conduct of a national forest inventory began in 2006. In 2008-2015, the Centre for National Forest Inventory of Ukrderzhlisproekt conducted regional forest inventories in Sumy and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, covering a total area of about 1 million hectares.
On 25 June 2020, the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to the Forest Code of Ukraine on the National Forest Inventory” came into force, which established the basic principles of the national forest inventory.
On 21 April 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the Procedure for conducting a national forest inventory. The Procedure defines the requirements for the organisation, procedures for conducting a national forest inventory, control over the forest inventory and reporting on its results.
In accordance with the requirements of the Procedure, the SE “Ukrderzhlisproekt” together with the URIFFM developed technical documentation regulating the technological aspects of the national forest inventory.
In 2021, the Centre for National Forest Inventory of Ukrderzhlisproekt started field work of the first cycle of the national forest inventory in Kyiv, Sumy, Ivano-Frankivsk, Cherkasy and Mykolaiv regions.
